Vacuum Filtration Equipment Assembly

Equipment used in vacuum filtration.

A ring stand and several clamps are used to support the filter flask and water bottle assemblies. The water bottle and rubber hose assembly are used to isolate the filter apparatus from the laboratory water supply. Both the Hirsch (smaller) and Buchner (larger) funnels are shown. The size of funnel to use will depend on the amount of material to be filtered.

Apparatus Assembly

Begin by firmly placing the two hole stopper in the water bottle.

Note that there are two different lengths of glass tubing in the stopper. The rubber tubing attached to the long glass tube will eventually be connected to the filter flask. Rubber tubing attached to the short glass tube will attach to the aspirator. Should any undesirable liquids pass from the filter flask into the water bottle, this arrangement will prevent them from entering the water supply via the aspirator.

Attach the rubber tube originating from the long glass tube to the filter flask.

This is quite often a tight fit. It helps to use a little water as a lubricant. Also, attempt to push the rubber tube on at an angle while using a twisting motion.

Secure the water bottle and filter flask to the ring stand using utility clamps.

Failure to adequately support the apparatus will make it unstable and likely to fall over breaking expensive glassware. Whenever you clamp glassware, remember to tighten the clamps firmly but do not over tighten since this too may break the glassware.
