Assemble
the thermometer stopper assembly.
- Using glycerine as a lubricant, insert the thermometer into the split cork
stopper. REMEMBER TO HOLD THE THERMOMETER CLOSE TO WHERE IT ENTERS THE STOPPER!!!
- Twist the thermometer until it can be read through the split in the stopper
- Attach the packed capillary to the thermometer using a small rubber band (actually
a slice off a rubber hose).
- Be sure to position the rubber band close to the rubber stopper to keep it
out of the hot oil
Fill
the Thiele tube with cold mineral oil and position the thermometer assembly.
- Since the oil expands as it gets hotter, it is important to initially fill
the Thiele tube no higher than the "armpit" indicated in the diagram
at right.
- Be sure the rubber band is not in danger of being immersed in the rising hot
oil.
- Position the thermometer such that it does NOT make contact with the sides
of the Thiele tube (you want to measure the temp. of the oil, not the Thiele tube)
