Thermowell Operation

The Thermowell electric heating unit (at left) is used when temperatures greater than the boiling point of water are required.

The depression in the center of the unit is where round bottomed flasks are positioned for heating.

A Powermite or Variac controller is used to control the temperature of the Thermowell.

The thermowell plugs into the controller and the controller plugs into the benchtop outlet. Never plug the thermowell directly into an outlet!

The Thermowell is plugged into the Powermite controller that is plugged into an outlet.

NEVER plug the Thermowell into an outlet directly. Try to arrange the wires and cords such that you won't be bumping into them as you conduct the experiments.

Support the Thermowell from below with a laboratory jack (figure at left).

This arrangement makes it possible to rapidly cool hot glassware by simply lowering the lab jack and Thermowell.
